"Bad bitches are taking over the world" - A quote from the book, #GIRLBOSS, that really stood out to me and NOT because I'm a bad bitch. Well....
For me, "bad bitches" refers to those who fight for what they want, work hard and kick ass in whatever they do. I'd like to think that I'm somewhat THAT kind of bad bitch. To be successful, I think it's imperative to be a "bad bitch".
Sophia Amoruso is the queen of the "bad bitches". She is such a unique person and has been fortunate enough to create such a unique business. Have you seen the clothes and accessories on Nasty Gal? I don't think I would wear most of the clothes because they're a bit out there, but there are definitely some cool and interesting pieces.
When you think about it, it's not really a unique idea; it's just another online fashion shop/ online vintage shop. But somehow, IT IS different from everything else out there.
But why is it different? What makes Sophia's company so unique? I think it's her work ethic, her accuracy and her passion to create something awesome without conforming to trends. In her book, Sophia discusses that sometimes, Nasty Gal do follow selected trends. But mainly, they've created their own stylistic trends for the forward-thinking fashionista. Sophia has created a company that she would shop at and has found a niche market who want to embrace the Nasty Gal style.
A lot of advice and tips are given throughout the book in order to become your own #GIRLBOSS. Sophia's advice is very adaptable. What do I mean by this?
Example: Sophia came from a very different background to me; I didn't drop out of school (currently at university), I've had some awesome, well-paid jobs and I've never stolen or hitch-hiked (you'll understand when you read the book). But I can take on board, all the advice given by Sophia on how to become a successful #GIRLBOSS. Our journeys may be completely different and Sophia has experienced certain hardships, but we have both failed. Failure; something that has really driven Sophia to be the success she is today and something that motivates me to be successful as well.
Failure comes in many shapes. My failures include SHOCKING theatre auditions, bad life choices (moving to Melbourne with a moron ex-boyfriend) and even a serious back injury that has completely changed my life course. My injury stopped me from continuing to dance and at the time, it felt like a failure; all those years of dancing and training gone out the window. But you know what, I'm so glad it happened (well, not the pain part). Now, my path to success is clearer. I'm now focusing more on acting and singing and my studies will allow me to become a businesswoman in the entertainment industry.
For Sophia, it's also about taking risks. It's about making bold choices and going for it. I'm taking a risk right now - this blog. I'm not a fashion or beauty expert and my life isn't ALWAYS lavish and amazing, but I'm putting myself out there, ready to fail or succeed. And no matter what happens, failure or success, I will learn and grow and continue to build my knowledge and experience.
Risks and embracing failure: the two things that really stuck with me after reading this book. If you are in a place in your life with little motivation to have a successful life, read #GIRLBOSS. Sophia came from nothing and now she's this extraordinary entrepreneur. Anyone can do it. You just need to find your passion and go for it.
